It isn’t news to anyone that our country is in danger. Our basis in liberty and individual self-government is ever being encroached on. But how did we get to this point? Most students don’t know the three basic branches of our government, nor do they know more than one or two of the founding fathers. In a truly disturbing turn of events, it was found that 37% couldn’t name one right protected by the first amendment such as freedom of religion, speech, the press and to peaceably assemble or to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Equally as concerning is that only 33% couldn’t name any branch of government. (Executive, Legislative, Judicial) Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop there. 72% of respondents didn’t know who the chief justice on the Supreme Court was. (See sources below)
The fact that people don’t have this basic knowledge at the forefront of their minds is truly concerning. In particular, the fact that such a percentage of the population is completely ignorant of the first amendment is one of the most alarming statistics we could be faced with. This handful of statistics we’ve pointed out are a glaring example of why the Constitutional Organization Of Liberty is so needed in our modern age. Samuel Adams expressed the need for education when he stated, “If Virtue & Knowledge are diffused among the People, they will never be enslaved. This will be their great Security.”
If you want to preserve a watchful and lasting republic, being active, informed, and instructional is absolutely essentially. Do you see problems in our country? Do you see ignorance and corruption in the highest levels of office? Do you dislike seeing exorbitant taxation only rise every year? Complaining and being frustrated is a reactionary and ineffective response, instead, let us work together and educate future and current generations alike on the basics of the Constitution and the TRUE nature of our country.
